I first stumbled upon this video on Instagram, randomly scrolling through reels. I heard the beat start and knew it was Erykah Badhu’s instrumental. I anxiously listened as Samara Cyn opened up with her first line. I instantly knew she was about to give us some heat. Like her voice, the Green Eyes Freestyle gave off her unique swagger that I haven’t really heard in a female rapper. So calm, yet so serious. So articulate, yet so smooth at the same time. I knew she was going to be one to watch.
Fastforward a few days and I see her get co-signed by Erykah Badhu herself. I was excited for her. Even Jill Scott gave her a shoutout. I patiently waited for her to drop new music so I can really get a feel for her style. In October 2024, she drops her project The Drive Home. Listening to the album, I felt immersed in her style and also felt as if I was tagging along on her journey.

She has this sound where it’s like a combination of neo soul / jazz fusion type of sound with a hip hop feel. Not only does she have a good voice for rap, but she sings too. While the landscape of female rap artists is blooming, it’s very seldom you see an artist with the capacity to be able to rap (and have good lyrics) and sing together. Samara does this perfectly. She moves between rap and melody with ease in her songs. On the song “Sinner”, she delivers raw storytelling on internal and external struggles. The delivery on the track “Auto-Pilot” is poetic, dealing with the questions of escapism and societal coping. “Chrome” spouts the handling of new found fame and being authentic.
Overall, Samara Cyn is THE new female artist to listen to. Her hype, her style, her visuals are all on par with what listeners want to see in an artist. We don’t see many artists that visually show us who they are as their lyrics interpret. Samra Cyn is the definition of an artist: talented, authentic, and true.
Listen to her new EP titled “backroads” now across all streaming services.
